It was in 1921 that the Communist Party of Canada was established. The first meeting was held secretly inside a barn located in Guelph, Ont. The secret meeting was headed by three members of the Communist International and attended by 21 Canadians, the names of which were kept secret until the year 1924. These participants during that secret meeting formed what was known as the Worker’s Party the next year, but in 1924, the party was abolished and what took its place was the Communist Party of Canada.
Like all the communist parties in other countries, they were inspired by the movement started by Lenin and have also patterned their ideals on the famous man. But, of course, with any new movements and revolutions come the struggles and the hardships, and the Communist Party of Canada has received their own. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police began harassing the group and breaking up their meetings. The police also took possession of their literatures as well as arrested its leaders. But this did not stop them, of course, and they found new avenues to fight for their belief and formed unions. They educated the workers and the youth in what they are fighting for.
To this date, the members of the Communist Party of Canada remained small, and in 1993, for them to be registered as a valid political party, it would require them to have 50 eligible candidates, and since they could not come up with the number, Elections Canada has opted to deregister them, which infuriated the political party. Fortunately, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled against the Elections Canada and allowed them and other small parties to register themselves in the elections.
